On March 16, 2007, the Leave a Legacy Foundation was created to honor the life of our dear friend Laura and to strengthen the cancer resources in southwest Kansas. Laura died at the tender age of 30 after a six year battle with brain cancer. She walked through it all with such beauty and grace, and always with a wink and smile on her face.
The 2019 Legacy 10K and Spirit 5K had more than 1000 registered participants and raised over $30,000 to further our mission of strengthening the cancer fighting resources in southwest Kansas. Although most of world has come to a screeching halt, cancer does not stop, and our fight is as crucial as ever.
Here’s what your support has helped to accomplish:
Greatest Needs Fund
In 2018, Leave a Legacy Foundation created the Greatest Needs Fund to assist the patients at Heartland Cancer Center. Patients can apply for assistance in the form of gas cards, meal vouchers and help with medical bills. This program is funded through individual donations. The Greatest Needs Fund has proven to be so helpful, especially now. For example, earlier this month, a patient needed nutritional supplements such as Boost or Ensure. Immediately, we were able to provide those supplements, so the patient did not have to have the added exposure of COVID-19 in the stores.
This year has proven to be a challenge for everyone with the global pandemic we are all facing. Leave a Legacy has tried to help with the burden that others are facing. In March, our board partnered with Meals on Wheels to provide meals to patients staying at Benincasa. We knew that two warm meals a day were being provided to our patients and their loved ones and the blessing that has been for them! We also paid for their stay at Benincasa and a local hotel so that they didn’t have the expense of traveling daily and could focus on recovery. Some of our board members even met a few patients staying at Benincasa, and they expressed how much their stay directly helped them. This small act made a huge difference!
Leave a Legacy understands the risks involved for those with compromised immune systems. Going into grocery stores increases the risk of exposure to COVID-19 and we were on a mission to see that our patients were provided with groceries without that risk of exposure. We provided a Dillon’s sack full of meals and attached a gift card for them to order online for delivery for any other groceries they required.
Leave a Legacy also knows the stress that COVID-19 has placed on doctors and nurses during this time. We wanted to show our appreciation for the staff at Heartland Cancer Center, so we prepared Taco Soup in a Bag for all employees. Inside the bags were all the ingredients to prepare dinner for their families as well as a Dillon’s gift card to purchase their meat and fresh toppings. We wanted them to know how much we value their dedication and commitment to patient care every day.
After much discussion our foundation board has come to the decision to NOT hold our traditional road race on the first Saturday in October. We want to protect the community and the patients, and this decision was decided out of the love and care for others. Instead, we want to encourage you to sign up for our virtual run. For more information visit www.whodoyourunfor.org. Thank YOU for giving us grace as we navigate these unchartered waters and make difficult decisions. We look forward to seeing everyone on the first Saturday in October 2021 for our BEST year yet!
Leave a Legacy has no paid employees. We are 100% volunteer driven, and we need your help! Enclosed we have opportunities for you to help support the Leave a Legacy Foundation.
