On March 16, 2007, the Leave a Legacy Foundation was created to honor the life of our dear friend Laura and to strengthen the cancer resources in southwest Kansas. Laura died at the tender age of 30 after a six year battle with brain cancer. She walked through it all with such beauty and grace, and always with a wink and smile on her face.
In 2017, we celebrated our 10 year anniversary and we have lots of exciting news to share! The newly remodeled Heartland Cancer Center played host to our race events, including runner registration Friday evening, the starting line Saturday morning and the Chris Cakes Pancake Feed which served over 500 people! It was a beautiful day to run and we hosted over 700 runners.
We also celebrated our 10 year anniversary with a nod to our past and hosted a casino night at the Golf Club at Southwind. It was a great night of fun and reminded us of the casino night we held in the Deal’s garage to raise our starter money for the foundation many years ago. The casino night will be a tradition we continue so stay tuned for more information about “Hearts are Wild” 2018!
With the proceeds from the race and casino night, we have been able to accomplish remarkable things! We made a $10,000 donation toward the purchase of the 3D mammography machine, because we know the importance of early detection and southwest Kansans deserve the best breast care close to home. We contributed $20,000 toward St. Catherine Hospital’s membership in the Midwest Cancer Alliance, which gives Heartland Cancer Center patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials right here at home. We have also taken the next step in the world of non-profits and created an Endowed Fund at the Western Kansas Community Foundation. As we get older and our families grow, we realize the importance of creating a fund that can continue our mission for generations to come.
Through your generosity we have also been able to continue Laura’s Touches, giving gifts such as gas cards to over 500 cancer patients taking chemo or radiation at Heartland Cancer Center; we Fill the Fridge twice a month with snacks and bottled water for patients and family members to have during treatments; we started Coffee with Caregivers, a group that meets once a month at Patrick Dugan’s Coffee House to support those caring for loved ones fighting cancer; we provided a FREE Cancer Screening in both Garden City and Ulysses.
Since we lost Laura in 2006, this small group of friends has also lost a father (Fred Deal), a mother (Sheila Roesler) and a husband (Brian Alexander) to cancer. Unfortunatly, the needs to support cancer patients continue to grow and we need your help to be able to continue to serve those in need. Please keep in mind, the Leave a Legacy Foundation has no employees or administrative costs. 100% of your donation is given directly back to the patients and families in southwest Kansas.
Our mission is to Strengthen the Cancer Fighting Resources in southwest Kansas. Please join us in our mission by donating today!
Thank you from the bottom of our winking heart!
