About the foundation

On March 16, 2007, the Leave a Legacy Foundation was created to honor the life of our dear friend Laura and to strengthen the cancer resources in southwest Kansas. Laura died at the tender age of 30 after a six year battle with brain cancer. She walked through it all with such beauty and grace, and always with a wink and smile on her face.

The year 2020 brought many changes for everyone.  We were nervous to host our virtual run but as always, we have the BEST supporters and were able to register almost 700 people across the United States!  Thank you for showing up and showing those most vulnerable that COVID can’t stop us from fighting for them!  We are tickled pink to announce some new and exciting things happening in the foundation!  First, we are replacing our 10K run with a half marathon!  We have mapped out a special race course and we hope our runners love it as much as we do!  Second, we are introducing “Legacy Lane,” which we hope will highlight some of our supporting local businesses.  Even amid a global pandemic, the Leave a Legacy Foundation has accomplished some great things!  Here is what your support has helped to accomplish:

Greatest Needs Fund

In 2018, Leave a Legacy Foundation created the Greatest Needs Fund to assist the patients at Heartland Cancer Center. Patients can apply for assistance in the form of gas cards, meal vouchers and help with medical bills. This program is funded through individual donations.

COVID-19 Assistance

Even during a global pandemic, the Leave a Legacy Foundation has been able to do so much for our community with your support.  Here is a glimpse of how we were able to help others during this unprecedented time.  We provided:

  • Over $10,000 in gas cards
  • Special nutritional needs for a cancer patient that was quarantined during COVID
  • Hotel stays and snack baskets for cancer patients when Benincasa was at capacity
  • Groceries for over 25 cancer patients to reduce COVID exposure
  • Meals on Wheels to ensure cancer patients were fed without having to grocery shop
  • Taco Soup in a Bag for staff at Heartland Cancer Center as a gesture of appreciation

Endowed Fund

We were able to establish an Endowed Fund through Western Kansas Community Foundation that will allow us to continue our mission for generations to come. Through your generous donations, our initial investment of $10,000 has grown to over $105,000 in just a few short years.

Laura’s Touches & Fill the Fridge

Once a month, the Leave a Legacy Foundation takes a “touch” to the patients receiving treatment at Heartland Cancer Center. It’s our way of saying “you have been touched by our angel Laura today and we are praying for you in your fight.” Touches this year have included gas cards, Pizza Hut gift cards, Dillon’s gift card to purchase their Thanksgiving meal, Scooter’s coffee gift cards, travel blankets, Roots gift cards and more. Through your generosity, we have been able to “Fill the Fridge” every month with snacks and drinks for patients, caregivers, and staff at Heartland Cancer Center.

Leave a Legacy has no paid employees. We are 100% volunteer driven, and we need your help! We have many opportunities for you to help support the Leave a Legacy Foundation. Follow us on Facebook to find out the latest information on our current and upcoming events.

Sincerely,

Leave a Legacy Foundation
